Song Review: WHY – “The Prophet”

WHY is a Canadian rock/pop band, formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1993, who use their music to promote and support positive causes.

I’ve been aware of WHY for years now. I know them as a band that sounds like U2. Their lead singer, Brian Cook, generally sounds like Bono and their music sounds like U2. They’ve been around since 1995, and have cut 5 albums (The Leap – 2013; Red -2007; Lazarus Effect – 2005; The Rise And Fall Of The Question Mark – 2001; and The Naked Soul – 1994) and have more recently been releasing singles for sale. This year they are working on a new album “Despite All Of The Darkness”, and the album’s 5th song, “The Prophet”, is what this review is about.

I haven’t really been listening to WHY over the years because I’m not really a U2 fan. WHY are a good band. They’ve even been given accolades directly from U2. In 2013, WHY was invited by ONE’s agit8 campaign (along with U2, Green Day, Usher, Will.I.Am, Bruce Springsteen, Mumford and Sons with Elvis Costello, Sting, Ed Sheeran, Muse, Aerosmith, and One Direction) to shoot a live low fi performance of The Rolling Stone’s “Gimme Shelter”, to draw attention to extreme poverty at the G8 Summit that year. ONE is a Non-Partisan Grassroots Movement For Poverty Justice, started by U2 singer BONO.

This week I listened to their latest recording “The Prophet” released on July 18, 2019. I was actually quite surprised. It’s simply a rock song. And I really liked it.

I liked it so much, it caused me to look back at their catalogue of published recordings available on SoundCloud and what I found was a good mix of music that isn’t all same same like I thought it would be.

Just like U2, Brian Cook generally writes songs that are politically based or present some commentary and stays away from the boring love song type of lyrics. That makes things a little more interesting. This song is not like U2, but rather it is more reminiscent of a SOUNDGARDEN or JACK WHITE tune, or even Ian Astbury vocally.

I think you should have a listen. And if you’ve never heard of WHY before, check out everything that’s available before you draw any conclusions. If you love U2, you’ll become a fan. If, like me, you’ve already underestimated and dismissed this band, I recommend you go back and have a listen to all their published recordings. You may come away hooked like I am.

“Despite All Of The Darkness” is still being recorded, but the singles in order of release are #1: “Repair The Breach” #2: “The Comeback” #3: “Can’t Stand Your Kids” #4: “God Particle” and #5: “The Prophet” and are available on their website.

WHY are currently recording the next album and it’s taking longer than planned due to budget. Help WHY finish the next album by donating to their album GoFundMe Campaign https://www.gofundme.com/NewWHYSongs. Any one time donation of any amount and you get the 5 singles released so far and all the other album tracks as they get recorded. So you are buying the album before it’s finished. Thank You for your support.
